I just wanna be there where you are
The moment that Cliff turned her suggestion into a bit of a joke in return, Vivian's tension eased. She over thought every bit of her conversation, wondered what the other person would assume, it was just rare that the red head cared about what the other person thought. For most of her life, she assumed that she was better than the majority of people she had been speaking to. Becoming an auror had changed that slightly, because it was different when it came to your co-workers and superiors at such a job. But Cliff? She cared about what Cliff thought of her. She cared about what Cliff thought about what she was saying. Cliff was important to her in that manner.

Thankfully her question about Darlin' seemed to steer the conversation into safer waters, so Vivian didn't trouble herself too much over what she considered to be a misstep. Because everything eased into that direction, so there was obviously nothing to worry about. But her brows lifted on her forehead at the idea of Cliff almost getting himself hurt on that apparent death trap, but she knew she couldn't really speak on that matter either. She had a scar down her arm because of her career choice, even if she thought his motorcycle was scary for no apparent reason, she wasn't going to lecture him on it.

A small smile appeared on her lips though, when he promised to keep her safe. That was... well, that was something he was apparently good at, though he was less good at keeping himself safe and Vivian wished he would have tried a little bit harder in that regard. "I'll keep you to that promise." Her smile grew a little bit as she teased him in return. Of course she was only teasing. It wasn't like she was going to show up on his doorstep covered in blood or something, right? Vivian had an easier time keeping her nose clean in that regard.

But he had only been joking about the ride and hadn't been speaking in general of life. So she winked at him and finished her cider, politely dabbing at her mouth with a napkin when she was finished. "What did you want to do for the rest of the afternoon? Do you have work later or anything?" Right back to talking about... life. Anything, everything, and nothing all at the same time. They were just supposed to hang out for a few hours this afternoon on this... date, but Vivian didn't want it to end. She knew logically speaking that after this round of drinks they were likely to be done and it would naturally be best for them to part ways after that.

Vivian just didn't want it to end. She wanted a lot more things, of course, but for the moment she just wanted to spend the rest of the day with Cliff. Talking to him, learning about him, laughing with him... and spending time with him. She couldn't because she was supposed to be having dinner with her parents later that evening, but it was a nice wish all the same. Though if Cliff had something that he needed to do after this, it would make it easier for her to politely accept her fate when the time came.

You can never say never While we don't know when. Time and time and time again. We are Younger now than we were before Don't let me go
It was true. Cliff was not the best at keeping himself safe. He never had been. He had never cared. Vivian had once accused him of only caring if someone else was in danger and she had been right. It wasn't something he did that he was fully aware of. He thought he was pretty alright. He knew he wasn't perfect and he knew parts of him broken. And that was okay. He was a drug dealer. He had never raised his hand to anyone he claimed to love. He drank but wasn't a drunk, or most nights he wasn't. He wasn't an alcoholic. He had never done drugs, except for trying weed in Uni but, who didn't? He was... he was okay. In spite of everything, he liked to think he turned out pretty alright.

Besides, there were others who had it worse. But if someone were to really think about it, Cliff had been interviewed dozens of times by couples who wanted children so desperately that they went searching to adopt. It's not easy to adopt. There's investigations and check ins and so many fees. It was so hard sometimes for people to get to the point where they could interview and meet with a potential kid and even these couples, who so so desperately children, none of them wanted him. He got kicked out of every foster home he was in until Hank. Hank kept him. Hank was a violent drunk bastard but he kept him. So sometimes, getting into a bit of a brawl, gaining a few new bruises, especially when he felt alone, sometimes that felt.... reminiscent of...well... care.

That dull ache of a bruise or a healing wound, not only did Cliff not mind it, sometimes he felt lost or alone without it. Of course, to someone like Vivian that probably sounded insane. To most it might. But it was his reality. He couldn't change who he was or what had happened. And he wouldn't because he can promise you, no cigarette burn on his shoulder, no whip from a belt or bruise from a fist could hurt as badly as people turning you away and deciding you weren't good enough for a family. You weren't worth a family.

But keeping people safe? That he might be able to achieve with better efficiency and since he felt pretty strongly for the stunning redhaired woman across from him, his chances were pretty good. Or he liked to think so. Reality might be the reverse. He grinned and shrugged his shoulders. "Not work but I've been avoidin' that office fer obvious reasons." He replied thinking about Casey. He had been avoiding all of that pretty entirely. Probably not the healthiest way to deal but it was the best he could do at the moment.

He had actually been planning to head to the lab at UCL. They had an open time slot and he had reserved it just in case. "I was gonna go werk on ma own stuff..." He grinned after a moment, thinking about it. "Have you ever seen a science lab?"

Avoiding the office for obvious reasons? Well, that could only be for one reason that Vivian would have found obvious. Casey. Cliff was avoiding his place of employment because his estranged biological sister. Who happened to also be a friend of Vivian's. She had to wonder what had led her down this tangled path to the point where she almost felt like she was supposed to take a side here. Everyone was a victim in different ways and paths and she couldn't even figure out what to say. There was also a part of her that was always going to be biased towards Cliff, no matter the situation. Because matters of the heart were always biased in such a way and she sort of felt guilty in that manner, because she had known Casey for basically her entire life. An entire life of of friendship was being pushed aside for.... whatever this was. At least a little.

Have you ever seen a science lab? She shook her head with no hesitation. After all, Vivian Faust had very rarely ever stepped foot into a muggle establishment that was not a restaurant or an opera house or things of that nature. If it was not to relax, she didn't go in, and that was sort of that. After all, why would a Faust ever do such a thing? But why would a Faust be in a muggle bowling alley in the middle of the day? The answer was very simple. The young man seated across from her. Who wasn't labeled by squib in her mind. Instead all she thought of when she thought of Cliff was that Scottish accent, skewed glasses, and big grin that suggested he was up to no good. Well, at least some good mixed with trouble making, at least. She thought of a tall, handsome man, and yes, bruises as well. Because he never seemed to be able to go through a week without one or two. And a million other things that seemed to just be... Cliff. He was the source of a lot of uncomfortable and entirely too comfortable thoughts all jumbled into one. It was all his fault. Somehow. She couldn't be mad at him for it though.

She could easily make a guess what a lab would look like. Probably something like a potions room, which wasn't unfamiliar to her. It didn't sound very appealing but Vivian hadn't brewed her own potions in years. It was a requirement to become an auror of course and she had had near perfect grades in that regard when she was in school. But that was because she also had good tutors and had worked hard for those grades. Not everyone was a genius after all. Oddly enough, hard work had paid off when she was just a Slytherin looking to become an auror. Maybe there was a little bit of a Hufflepuff hiding unde the green, who knew right?

"Are you still trying to find the magic in wizarding blood?" It was something he had mentioned briefly before. If he was avoiding his actual job and doing things in a science lab, then it made sense he was looking for something in his... hobby. She thought of that word lightly, because he had seemed decently obsessed with the situation all the same. Not that she could blame him at all. Not for that.

You can never say never While we don't know when. Time and time and time again. We are Younger now than we were before Don't let me go
Cliff narrowed his eyes pensively as he took in her words, "Not sure if I'd put it quite like that." He said with a laugh, "But aye." Cliff confirmed. Truth was he didn't really think of magic the same way everyone else did. Observable rules meant science. Magic didn't really work in mysterious ways, it simply worked in unknown ways. It was a more extraordinary branch of science that had yet to be really figured out. Potions was the start. These do this and all that jazz but it's masters still hadn't thought to wonder why these do this and those do that and this makes your hair turn purple while this kills you and yet, there were muggles who used a potion, aka hair dye, to make their hair purple. There were muggles who used potions to kill people, they just called it poison.

Maybe to some this would make magic seem less but to Cliff it made it even more amazing because just when he had thought his grasp on how the universe ran itself was fairly superior in comparison to most, he had his eyes opened to this whole new branch of the world. This whole new subject that he could learn from and play with and discover. The Science of Magic. It even had a nice ring to it. Like a subject that could be taught at a university or something. Or even at wizards schools. Lord knows the wizard population needed some at least basic science training.

Cliff watched her for a moment and grinned. He turned on his stool and downed the last of his drink in one large gulp before standing up and putting his hand out for her's, now that they both had their own shoes on. "'main 'en " He encouraged, scottish for 'come on'. Most of the time he forced himself to speak less scottish and more english but sometimes, if his mind was moving onto other things, his mouth would forget. But luckily the meaning should be obvious enough considering he started to lightly tug her to follow him towards the exit.

As the began walking, he looked back (and let's be honest, even in her heels, looked down) at her. With the hand that wasn't absentmindedly laced in hers, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone. "This is mah phone, as I'm sure you're aware. It turns mah voice inta radio waves, sends those to towers we have installed sporadically which triangulates the location of another person and then sends them to that phone an' re-translates them into sound waves again so the other person can hear what I'm sayin' in a matter of seconds from around the world." He explained quickly, not because he assumed her not to know how a cell worked but for emphasis.

"A muggle device. No magic, right?" He paused with a grin as he pointed to a visible cell tower a bit in the distance as the stepped outside. "Except, a couple centuries ago, if I showed this device to muggles, they would call it witchcraft, magic, since they would not be able, at that time, to understand 'ow it worked because that science hadn't been discover yet " He glanced around to make sure there were no eaves dropping muggles watching them. He pointed to her hands, certain she had her wand hiding somewhere on her person. "You wave yer wand an' thin's happen, so you call it magic, but I see you wave yer wand in specific patterns in conjunction with specific words or gestures which cause correlating events to take place, so I call it science. Undiscovered science. That's all magic is. Otherwise it wouldn't follow observable rules."

I just wanna be there where you are
Vivian really didn't want this date to end, but she was practical. She knew it was going to have to. It wasn't like they could attach at the hip and walk around together all day. Besides the red head was quite sure that they would both want to murder each other before the end of the very first day. After all, she was pretty sure they had wanted to murder each other every five minutes when they had first met. Vivian was almost deadly certain that she had wanted to wring his neck herself before she had gotten him untangled from that chair he had been tied to. Yes, she was pretty certainly, even though it had seemed like a lifetime before.

So she was a little sad when Cliff got up but she followed suit, neatly pushing her glass towards where the waitress would have an easier time grabbing it and settling her skirt as she rose up on those high heels. And she had no idea what the hell mein 'en meant in the least bit, but the gesture and tone was easy enough to place. He wanted her to follow. One eyebrow sharply rose at that but she followed all the same as he tugged her in the direction of the exit. Her fingers tightened around his, as if her mind wanted to hold onto him just a little bit longer, and she followed as easily as her shorter legs would allow. At least the skirt was easier to move in since she had changed the hemline slightly.

When he pulled out that muggle device, she looked at him with a look that borderline uncomfortable and slightly exasperated. If only because he was once again, talking about things that she didn't understand. He was trying to explain, but Vivian had no clue radio waves or triangulation or any of that sort of thing was. She understood, in basics, things like sound waves because there was a little of that in charms books of certain kinds to explain what spells did to the sound, but basically the rest of it went over her head. It was a communication device. Like... an owl or a two way mirror or other things of that nature. From what she was understanding.

Of course, it was all just to explain that he was trying to figure out magic in a similar way that he had figured out how the muggle thing worked. Which Vivian didn't quite understand, but she wasn't someone who needed to know the why of all the mysteries in the world. Cliff was though. She could understand it a bit though, because she often wanted to know the why when it came to certain crimes and things of that nature, if only because... well, they were for depressing reasons really. Why would someone do that? What would drive them to... it didn't matter. She didn't want to think about murders or other things of that nature while she was out with Cliff and those were the only things she wanted to know why about outside of her personal life.

"It's still magic to me." As in, she had no clue how the device worked. She could only really relate it to magic. Not that Cliff would likely enjoy hearing that, but Vivian didn't see the point in beating around the bush. Besides the smile on her lips had to count for something right? "So how do you get it to... talk to another person?" She leaned in to take a look at it, poking it with one finger as if she were unsure how it turned on. Vivian Faust had never touched a cell phone before. She had no clue how it worked in the least bit. At least when the screen lit up in response, she poked it again, trying to see what it would do. She didn't have anything to compare it to, so she just kept poking it, for as long as Cliff would let her.

You can never say never While we don't know when. Time and time and time again. We are Younger now than we were before Don't let me go
Cliff was happy to be here with her. He was happy even though his words might be confusing for Vivian every so often, she didn't seem to find him odd in any way other than the fact that he was raised by muggles. Or... well, it was hard to describe what he meant, but he wasn't... when she looked at him as he talked about science or how he saw the world in equations, she didn't look at him like it made him unsavory or someone to be tossed aside because who wants to listen to that. Even if she didn't get it, even if sometimes she would rather be talking about anything else, even if she didn't get it, there wasn't that look in her eyes that he had grown so accustomed to over the course of his life.

He could not remember ever seeing that look on her face, even when they first met. Even the first few times they met when they really could not stand each other. Granted Vivian had not yet seen him sitting around reading three books at a time because he did do that sometimes and I don't mean he would read book A in the morning time and book B when waiting for doctor appointments and book c before bed. I mean he would be sitting at a desk with multiple books open in front of him and he would be reading one sentence from Molecular Genetics of Immunoglobulin and then another sentence from Viral Genome Replication and then maybe one or two sentences from Proteome Research: Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis and Identification Methods'

And yes, those were all books he had sitting on his desk in his room at the Leaky Cauldron. They all were helpful in some which way. Reading numerous at a time made it easier for him to retain the information because his brain was so easily distracted at times. It was easier for him to have more information to keep his mind busy. If there wasn't enough, he would end up reading but also thinking about the Pemberlys and Casey, or Vivian or Hank or the last sci fi movie he saw and the inaccuracies it portrayed.

He no longer minded thinking of Vivian but the thoughts, while they no longer made him angry or upset, were still distracting. It was easy to be distracted by those eyes and the way they curved when she smiled, and the way she had a perfect smile, like textbook smile. When you google image searched "smile", she had one of those and those usually didn't belong to real people. She looked like she was in a toothpaste commercial every time. But as she literally began just poking his cell phone, it was his time to smile, amused by the look in her eyes as the lock screen came up.

After a moment the screen went black again. He clicked the power button on the side quickly to wake it up again. He kept it in her sight as he swiped the screen to the left and it asked for his thumb print. He pressed his thumb down as the phone took a quick scan and left him into the system. Once in he handed it to her. "See this wee icon?" He asked, pointing down the the phone symbol. "Ya touch that an' it takes you to another screen where there will be a bunch o' numbers. Each phone gets a code of numbers assigned to them. Fer example, this line is 0131-693-2232, type in the numbers an' press call. simple as that, least in terms of 'ow to work the phone, as opposed to how the phone works." and of course, nowadays, most people had all their friends and family programmed in and didn't ever have to type in the numbers. "Fun fact, they don't work as well in the wizard world. Magic messes wit' the signal." He could usually get something in Diagon, but only if near the pubs and the book stores. Closer he got to shops that sold charmed objects or magical services, or gringotts, the weaker his signal.

I just wanna be there where you are
There were plenty of things in the world that Vivian didn't understand. There were plenty of things that she felt she didn't need to understand. And of course, there were plenty of people who were smarter than her. Cliff was one of those. It was one of those things that had frustrated her in the beginning because the red head had felt... dumb sometimes around him, when he was spouting off in that Scottish accent about a million things she couldn't even begin to describe. Even the way he spoke about magic was different and odd, but it was smart sounding at least, and it was with concepts that she found difficult to grasp.

Even now as he turned his cell phone on and showed her the icon to dial out, she had no founding basis over what it meant. It wasn't like phones had ever been a real thing in the wizarding world, despite the advances in modern technology, but that was likely because the wizarding world felt it didn't need those types of advances. You could just apparate or send an owl. A floating note in the Ministry. Two way mirrors and the like. The idea of being connected to another person to speak to them through such a device was weird to Vivian, but muggles were smart. They had come up with all sorts of ways to get around not having magic without really knowing what they were missing.

But the fact that muggle things and magic didn't get along wasn't new to Vivian. She had heard that one before at Hogwarts. "Places like the Ministry and Hogwarts have had announcements about that sort of thing for muggle borns. Apparently these are expensive and some people are put up when their device breaks for seemingly no reason." Which was another point in the general argument that muggle things did not belong in the wizarding world. Including muggles, squibs, and perhaps even muggle born.

Except that would create a very drab, inbred world, wouldn't it? If they didn't accept anyone but purebloods then... it would be a very small community indeed. And who knew where their world would end up? Or how back water they would be for it. Vivian had never argued for those things before because it would have been unseemly, but the red head didn't hold such thoughts now. It was like her eyes had been opened to new considerations.

But she pulled her hand back from the phone and smiled at Cliff all the same, even if she was curious as to what all the other icons would do and what they all meant. At least he was willing to explain it to her, even if she had trouble grasping it all. "How often do you use it?" She owl'd someone almost every day. At work she certainly used the flying memos to talk to various departments when she needed things, but Vivian was still trying to understand what this was. Standing out in broad daylight in front of a muggle bowling alley with Cliff, talking about nothing. The red head hadn't even realized that she was trying to prolong this moment as much as she could.

You can never say never While we don't know when. Time and time and time again. We are Younger now than we were before Don't let me go
Cliff took that fact about areas of high intensity magic, like Hogwarts and the Ministry and it's interference with electronics and wireless signals and simply more evidence of it's scientific nature. It's a force that leaves behind a physical and observable trace. A field of energy left behind from it's utilization. One of the first things Cliff wanted to do, aside from increasing his knowledge on the hereditary nature of magic, was figure out a way to tweak his own electronics that they could still work just as well no matter where he had them. He thought it was doable and hey, maybe in fifty years they could store medical records electronically instead of having nearly endless storage rooms of files that consistently get lost. Maybe save students some trouble typing their papers instead of writing them all out on parchment with quills, not to mention the carpal tunnel syndrome it would prevent.

He chuckled at Vivian's words. He knew very well of the warnings. In his personal experience, that energy usually prevented the electronics from working properly but rarely broke them. Once back in London, they operated just fine, but that was because he wasn't a fool and shut his tech down before going into those highly magical concentrated areas. When he had to speak in court at the ministry and ran into Vivian last year, back when they hated each other, or back when she hated him and he had still had her written off in the box reserved for hateful asshats, he had his cell on him. It was in his back pocket. It didn't break because he turned it off before entering so the cell wouldn't keep shorting out and damaging itself.

He could keep it on most placed with magic, the signal was just spotty. It was just the places where really strong magic is being performed regularly were... harder. But he'd figure it out. It wasn't evidence of anything apart from energy and an incompatible tech. The key to figuring it was really finding out if magic gave electronics a boost that caused shortages. Sort of how you want to have surge protectors for your computers if there's a storm because if the power goes out, the overflow of electricity when it comes on can short the electronics in the computer. Perhaps magic was shorting it out and if that's true, could magic be used as an alternative and clean energy source for muggle tech? Or was it an energy that was completely incompatible? Like trying to power an old crank radio with gasoline. Or a gas-powered car with wind turbines.

It had nothing to do with suggesting the magical and the non-magical didn't mix. Those were those idiotic comparisons that literally meant nothing. It was like saying that because wearing big heavy fur coats was unnecessary and could actually be hazardous in warm temperatures, people from the north and far south should not associate with people near the equator. It made no sense. But of course, bigots would use whatever they wanted to justify their beliefs and to be honest? Science was not innocent in this. People use "science" to justify bullying fat kids. People used "science" to justify white supremacy. And that was mainstream science moving back several decades. Doctors studied the general differences in European vs African skulls and decided because of their skulls shapes being a bit different, Africans were less evolved and more similar to apes than caucasians and this was used to dehumanize, abuse and otherwise treat people like animals. Hell, the Nazis were famous for their abuse of science and psuedo-science.

No, muggles were far from innocent. After all, the The International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy established in 1692 only was put in place to protect witches and wizards from muggles, who's ignorance and sometimes religious fanaticism caused them to fear magic and stigmatize it's users. "Everyday really." He replied honestly. Even though he didn't call people everyday, especially since so many of whom he knew were now without cells, he still used it for something or other. "I can get a decent signal at the Leaky, prolly from it being an entrance to muggle London but if I'm not callin' someone, other things." He added. He clicked the map icon at the bottom of the screen which pulled up his Google Maps. "This, I can put an address in and it gives me directions from wherever I am to that destination... and it only knows where I am because this little thing is actually sending and receiving signals from other machines that are literally in outer space... mapping the world."

GPS was always going to be a really cool technology in his opinion. He wasn't ever going to get over how awesome it was that it wasn't long ago when the thought of humans even going into space was a pipe dream and now? Most everyone had tech in their purses, pockets and hands that only worked because of signals from man-made structures in space. We all have space age tech in our pockets and no one seemed to really get how cool that was. He looked at Vivian and smiled, "I used it to get to yer place." the first time. "Yer flat an' the estate fer the Christmas shindig" Theoretically, Vivian and him would not have been together if it weren't for that night and if he had not had his phone, he may not have found it, or he may have found it but much later and she may have been caught up in this or that. Who knew? Small changes can have big ripples.

I just wanna be there where you are
Everyday? How could someone use that every day? She knew there were people who used owls every day, but she wasn't in that group. She only wrote things for reports at work and ot her such things. Owls were reserved for personal use and she only ever owl'd to ask to meet up with her friends for tea or dinner. Those sorts of things. Like she was hoping to owl Cliff, to tell him she wanted to see him. Wanted to go out. Wanted to do something or other, in the future. She was just going to have to figure out how to owl him without anyone realizing it. At least for a little while.

It apparently communicated with others with the same device. And was some sort of map that could guide. Before saying a bunch of things that couldn't connect in her mind no matter how much she tried to think about it in her mind. It was a muggle device, she didn't know how it worked and it sounded so very complicated in place of a simple magical explanation. Not the work of an elf. Not a clever charm. Nothing of that sort, though Vivian could think of how to make a set of charms on an object like a make up mirror to get the same abilities.

Wouldn't that be funny? A wizarding... whatever that was again. Or even one that could interact with his device. Something she could use on the wizarding side to talk to him on the muggle side. Vivian wasn't much of an inventor though. She was better at perfecting things that others had created and using them in creative ways to get the job done. Smart, just in different ways. Timing and instinct could count for a lot of things in many fields, but she used it well as an auror.

But if he had used it to find the estate and her apartment, maybe it was useful enough indeed. "Well, at least it's useful." In a sense even she could understand. "I can't say everything in my purse is always useful." There were a lot of things in there just in case, but also a minor weight lightening spell to go along with an expanded inner portion. Charms made her world go round these days. She just liked to be prepared, after what had happened in that back alley in Knockturn.

"I suppose we're just delaying saying goodbye, aren't we?" The red head smiled just a touch, speaking softly before lifting a hand to tuck hair behind one of her ears. "Why don't we go for a short walk in a near by park, then we'll both go home. Unless you have other ideas?" If he had another suggestion for them to spend their time with each other this afternoon, she was all ears. She just didn't want things to become awkward because neither of them knew how to say goodbye. For a little bit. Which was what it was starting to feel like, standing around talking about... well, guidance devices and ways of communication while they stood a little too close to each other.
